Village Green Kikuyu

Village Green Kikuyu

Commonly used in sporting fields, playgrounds, high traffic public areas and backyards, Village Green Kikuyu is a proven performer in most Australian climates. A hardy turf with superior density and wear tolerance, its vigorous growth habit allows it to repair very quickly if damaged.

Village Green Kikuyu has a strong, deep root system that allows it to withstand even the hottest Summer days and contributes to its good drought tolerance. Village Green Kikuyu is a non-seeding Male Sterile Kikuyu (MSK) variety, therefore it is less invasive than many types of Kikuyu and will not spread via seeds, only through its own stolons and rhizomes.

Turf Summary

Village Green Kikuyu grass is a cost-effective variety of turf that is wear resistant, and rapidly self-repairs – making it perfect for busy families with children or pets.

With a deep root system and incredible drought tolerance, Village Green Kikuyu requires very little water once established. This turf is an economical allrounder that is known for its vigorous growth.

Installation & Maintenance

Our Village Green Kikuyu can be installed all year round. It is one of the very few turf varieties that establishes a strong root system even when planted in winter.

Village Green Kikuyu can be maintained at a wide range of mowing heights and has a dense growth system which makes it one of the most versatile grasses available in Australia. Kikuyu is best mowed at low to medium height, but if the mowing height is kept reasonably low, the turf will have little thatch. We recommend hand-picking weeds by their roots. Broadleaf sprays control clover, bindi and broadleaf weeds. Before using any chemical, always read the product label for full directions, application, safety directions and guidelines.

Characteristics

Village Green Kikuyu has a medium texture with a vibrant emerald green colour. This is particularly evident during the cooler months, when compared to other warm-season grasses it can maintain good colour.

Village Green Kikuyu prefers full sun and is moderately shade tolerant as long as it receives four or more hours of total sunlight per day. Kikuyu will continue to grow very slowly over the cooler months. In Victoria over Winter, Village Green Kikuyu may lose its lush green colour, becoming a lighter colour and in very cold Winters, it may turn yellow/brown as a result of the frosts burning the turf’s leaves. If you do get a heavy frost you can assist in stopping it from burning the turf by giving it a quick water in the morning to wash the ice off the leaves. Once the weather warms up in Spring, you can mow the dead leaves off, leaving behind a gorgeous green lawn. In Summer, Village Green Kikuyu will need to be mowed weekly.

Deep watering (substantial watering at one time, less regularly as opposed to frequent small watering) promotes the root system to go lower into the soil profile. Kikuyu is a very invasive grass, therefore the turf runners grow under the ground as well as on the top of the ground.

Fertilising

Village Green Kikuyu can maintain good density even with low levels of fertiliser. Although it responds well to nitrogen fertiliser all year round, we recommend fertilising in April, September & November. Water the fertiliser in well for maximum effect.
